Training Video Creation

Health and Safety

Many people would prefer workplace safety training on a sleepless night as a more effective alternative to counting sheep. To combat this negative stereotype, safety educators often try making such training fun. While "fun" wasn't part of this project's brief, making it as interesting and engaging as possible became my personal mission.

About the Project
  • Task
    Office safety training video creation
  • Team
    The client's e-learning team, a subject-matter expert, and a freelance videographer
  • Audience
Office workers who must go through mandatory training
  • My Role
Instructional designer, content creator, and course producer
  • Client
Unital, a workplace safety training company
  • ID Approach
ADDIE and Backward Design (Understanding by Design)
Why Video Training?
While the client wasn't new to online learning, they had very few video courses at the time we started working together. The company wanted to test a new video format as a possible addition to their training portfolio.
Analysis and Design
  • Audit and Brainstorming
I reviewed the client's existing video courses with the project objectives in mind. Based on this analysis, I came up with several ideas to make the new video course more effective and engaging.
  • Curriculum Design
Using government requirements for workplace safety training, I developed the course learning outcomes. Based on the outcomes, I created a structure for a 20-minute video and organized the content into short sections, which could be turned into a micro-learning series.
  • Video Shoot Planning
The client wanted to work with a new a video studio and videographer. I found several options that met the client's criteria and helped select the most suitable.
Development and Implementation
At the video shoot
  • Content Development
I conducted extensive research on workplace health and safety regulations to develop the course content. I used government requirements and a short sample from the client to guide my work.
    1
  • Video Script Preparation
Once the training content was approved, I turned it into a video script that detailed each scene's visual actions, corresponding audio and duration.
    2
  • Video Shoot
I helped the videographer with testing the chosen studio. During the video shoot, I ran a teleprompter, helping the speaker maintain a comfortable speed of content delivery.
    3
  • Video Editing
Like many video projects, this one had several rounds of revisions, where I checked the edited course for accuracy and visual appeal.

Learner Engagement
As far as my "make it engaging" mission, here's how I addressed it within the boundaries of the project brief.
  • Storytelling
The training started with a real-life story to persuade learners that course information could save their lives in an emergency.
  • Engaging Narrator
Finding a presenter with a lively speaking manner became part of the plan to make the instruction more engaging.
  • Visual Variety
I proposed to mix stock photos, B-roll, icons, and illustrations into the visual track to make the training more diverse and easier to follow.
  • Conversational Style
I wrote the training content in a conversational style to sound more like a caring colleague than strict government rules.

Team Engagement
I believe that happy teams produce good results. While there were a few bumps in the project road, I tried to maintain a positive and friendly atmosphere despite the challenges. As a result, everyone did their best and was a good teammate.
Result Evaluation
The client was very happy with the final project and decided to include similar formats in future training development.
Your training has received high marks not only from our partners, but also within our company. Thank you very much for the significant contribution you’ve made to the creation of this project.

Project Reflection
While the training content preparation went well, the videographer ran into technical challenges with the video file. Even though the test before the shoot went smoothly, something went wrong on the actual day, which affected the final video's quality. This experience taught me the importance of double- and triple-checking everything.
